The History of Chinese Schools in the USA

The History of Chinese Schools in the USA

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in 2009, the nation's residents who are
over age of 5 who speak Chinese witin their family was up to 2.6 million. It is the third
largest language spoken at home after English and Spanish. Chinese families have always
put a high value on education, and many Chinese schools are being opened up by Chinese parents.
Dr. Ma Liping, Principal of California Stanford Chinese school explained that the history of Chinese
schools in the United States can be divided into three stages: the first is when the opening of
Cantonese Chinese schools as the main body were set up mainly by non-governmental organizations
of the early immigrants for the Guangdong Chinese and their descendants. the second stage is
started from the mid-1960s, with a large number of Taiwanese students moving to the United States
to stay, many Chinese-language schools were set up and the development is considerable big.
The third stage is the beginning of the 1990s . Founded in 1995 in New Jersey, Huaxia Chinese
School is an example of the third stage . There are more than 70 students in the school and
now it has more than 19 campuses throughout the east coast of the U.S. with more than
7,000 students.  At the end of last year, the school held a teaching seminar in Philadelphia,
the with an estimated 300 teachers. The schools engage in Chinese teaching, but also regularly
organize a variety of after school activities,  such as "China Night", "China Star", "China Track
and Field Games," etc, in order to  strengthen networking and to increase interest of learning for students.
